first dispatch from South Africa
We got lucky, for once: on the 10-hour flight from Singapore to Johannesberg, we had an extra seat in our row (we’d had middle and aisle, the window seat was empty). So I moved over and with the benefit of extra room to curl up, managed to get nearly seven hours of sleep.
The guy who picked us up fromt he airport said *not* to go downtown, because it’s dangerous if you don’t know where [not] to go. But our hotel was attached to a casina with a bunch of restaurants, so we had tasty Indian food for lunch, a rest in our room, and then just salads for dinner.
Today we were picked up early and taken along the Panorama Route, with stops at some scenic overlooks (God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes), then fetched up at Oliver’s Lodge in White River, which is gorgeous. I think the owner was originally a chef, so tonight’s dinner should be special – after drinks on the veranda! Doesn’t that sound nice?
Tomorrow morning we’re off early to Sabi Sands Game Reserve, which is in (or attached to) Kruger National Park. The Lodge there looks pretty spectacular too, but I don’t think there will be any internet, so expect us to be quiet for a bit.
